Athletics Schedule Update

Due to the weather and field conditions, the baseball and softball games vs Coleman scheduled for tomorrow have been postponed to Wednesday, April 16th.

The JV Softball games will be home at 4pm and the varsity teams will travel to Coleman for a 4pm start, bus still leaving at 2pm.

The MS track meet at home this week will now be on Wednesday, April 16 instead of Tuesday, April 15th due to a schedule conflict. Field events will still begin at 4pm. We are still in need of workers for this meet, if you can help out, please contact jhelinski@montabella.com.

The JV softball game vs Alma scheduled for Wednesday April 30th has been cancelled because Alma didn't have enough girls for a JV team. The Varsity team will still travel to Alma on this day.

The Boys Varsity Baseball team did add an invite at Tri-County on Saturday, May 3rd (if the snow is all gone by then!!!). The tournament is hosted at different sites and the finals take place at Tri-County. First game will be at 9am in Grant.

Please make all changes to schedules as needed.

Smith to Run Cross Country at University of Detroit-Mercy

BLANCHARD, Mich. -- Montabella High School senior Taylor Smith will go down as one of the best and most decorated athletes in Montabella history.

Now, she is taking her talent to another level. Smith signed a letter of intent to run cross country at University of Detroit-Mercy, becoming one of only a few MHS student-athletes to ever play college at the Division I level.

During her time at Montabella, Smith earned all-state honors all four years of high school. She finished in the Top 30 individual places at the MHSAA State Finals, including two top five finishes. She also holds the school record time of 18:54. In her senior year, she took on more of a leadership role with team and led the Lady Mustangs to an eighth-place overall team finish, the best in school history.

Montabella cross country coach Jeff Kauffman was very impressed with Taylor’s leadership this year. “Taylor was one of the most competitive runners I have ever coached. Even when she didn’t feel well, she still gave it her all. Much of this season’s success was predicated on her senior leadership and hard work put in by Taylor during the off-season. With her attitude, dedication, and accolades, Taylor has become the new Montabella model for what is a successful cross-country runner.”

Not only did Taylor experience success in cross country, she was also twice an all-state basketball player and was on a relay team that placed at the state finals in track as well. She will be running track for Montabella this spring and is looking to bring home more awards for the Mustangs.

All State Girls

Congrats to both Taylor Smith and Sarah Miller who both were named AP Honorable Mention All State for girls basketball today. This is the second time that both players have each earned this honor.

They both already have all state plaques on the All State Wall and we will add these accomplishments to it as well!

Way to go ladies!
